The fire started around 10:40 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 15 Skidmore Road, said LaGrange Fire Chief Barry Ward.
Arriving units found heavy fire on the second floor of the left side of the home, he added. Firefighters were able to make a quick attack and had extinguished the flames within an hour or so and cleared the scene by 1 p.m., he said.
Two residents were not home at the time of the fire, but a dog was rescued and a cat was unaccounted for. No firefighters were injured, Ward said.
The 224-year-old home received heavy smoke and water damage, but can be repaired, the chief said.
Assisting at the scene included Arlington, Pleasant Valley, East Fishkill, New Hackensack, and Union Vale fire departments, as well the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, Central Hudson, and the state police.
The Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division is investigating the cause of the fire, Ward said.
